Every where there is evil. In the movie Watchmen it takes place in an alternate 1985 where vigilantes roam the streets keeping the peace. Richard Nixon is still president and the US won the Vietnam War. The US and the Soviet Union are closing in on nuclear war. Throughout the course of the movie the vigilantes are being targeted. The remaining Watchmen are on their guard. Eventually they unite to fight against the assassin attempting to take their lives. They are shocked to find out that it is one of them.
In the end they are not able to stop his plan for attacking all of the major cities in an attempt to prevent nuclear war between the US and the Soviet Union. The plan works and peace is reached but at the cost of thousands of lives. This is a secret the Watchmen must keep in order to keep the peace. If the secret is revealed then nuclear war will happen and everything in the world would be destroyed.
If that situation ever occurs in our future will that be the only thing to prevent countries from wiping out the world? Would you have to kill thousands to save millions? Those are hard questions to answer. I do not know what I would do if I was in the Watchmen’s situation. I would like to think that I would tell the truth no matter what. But the truth would have worse consequences than if you hid it. The truth would mean the destruction of everything. While the secret means life. Also if you kept a secret of that magnitude would you be able to survive with the truth and the guilt of knowing everything.
I hope that nothing like this ever has to happen. The leaders of every nation must understand the consequences that will occur if there is a nuclear war. That consequence is the end of everything. The citizens of the world will have to make sure that does not happen.
The Comedian: …Our days are numbered. Till then it's like you always say, we're society's only protection.
Night Owl: From what?
The Comedian: You kidding me? From themselves.

I saw the movie and thought that it was a good illustration for negative peace. Peace on earth was restored through fear and a unity between rival world powers. To me there was no peace because the world was now living in fear; fear of a new worldly threat. It wasn't so much that the world was now getting along in harmony it was more that the world had shifted their defense towards a new, more powereful enemy. To me world peace would have been a world with out any enemies. This was not the case in the movie. There really wasn't a new enemy but the civilians of the world did not know that. That was part of the secret that the watchmen could not reveal. If that secret got out then there might be a chance that the world would revert back to its old ways and old enemies. The watchmen felt like their would be peace if the world united against a common enemy and that is what the world did, unite against a common enemy. The problem with that plan as we read in our text is that there is a lot of destruction that is suffered by people in the preparation of war. So to me the movie was about a lie that enabled a false peace that was a negative peace to allow the world to go on with out anymore self destruction or the threat of self destruction.
